One of our favorite iconic Mitsubishi sports cars is set to return to Mitsubishi dealerships sometime in March 2018 – but Mitsubishi presages that "sharp coupe looks" are set to fuse with "dynamic SUV mobility." What kind of segment-bending result can we expect here at South Suburban Mitsubishi?

For one, a new Mitsubishi CUV with some attention-commanding design inspiration: that of a runner in the starting position, to be sure. The 2018 Eclipse Cross showcases a wedge profile with all the promise of getting set and going, giving way to a sleek beltline coupling with the strong character of a forward raked rear window, angular rear, and short overhang. Rounding off with prominent fenders encasing our automaker's signature DYNAMIC SHIELD front design concept, the new Eclipse Cross definitely looks the performance part.

Rocket out the gate, it surely will, too. A Super All-Wheel Control system, the proprietary Mitsubishi all-wheel drivetrain, blends straight-line acceleratory stability with cornering professionalism, putting the new 2018 Eclipse Cross on an even keel with the landscape through inclement weather. Its turbocharged 152-horsepower, 1.5-liter direct-injection engine also delivers an energetic 184 pound-feet of torque to help make the grade, with sodium-filled exhaust valves for a winning combination of drive and efficiency.

Plus, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross won't be short on stellar features of broad appeal to both segments. Among them, an available power-sliding panoramic sunroof, whose front panel burgeons up to 17 inches, surely offers promise for a top-down sportster-evocative thrill or two. A 7-inch display audio infotainment system with smartphone link dovetails with a new touchpad controller to put apps and vehicle functions within reach for the duration, and you can even keep an eye on critical metrics projected onto the windshield via an optional Head-Up Display (HUD).

Factor in top-tier available driver-assist tech like Blind Spot Warning and Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, an Adaptive Cruise Control System, and Automatic High Beams, and situational awareness comes along for the ride. Ditto for the comfort of your rear passengers thanks to heated rear seats, available in the SEL Touring Package.

But perhaps most interestingly is the flagship rollout in the new Eclipse Cross of the available MITSUBISHI CONNECT system. Combining telematics with a 4G LTE cellular modem and GPS capability, you can gain access to connected services like SOS Emergency and Information/Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification, stolen vehicle retrieval help, mileage tracking, and more. Opt for an available Remote Services package, and it becomes easy to adjust climate settings from wherever you like, as well as lock or unlock the CUV's doors, activate its horn and lights, locate it from a distance, and manage Parental Controls like Geo Fence, Speed Alert, and Curfew Alert.

Until early next year, we wait – and expectantly, we might add. But that doesn't mean you must forgo the new Mitsubishi SUV experience. Stop by and visit us here at South Suburban Mitsubishi, 5343 Miller Circle Drive here in Matteson, IL, and we'll take you for a spin in a new Mitsubishi Outlander or Outlander Sport sure to get your engines revving for the new 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
